I — The day so far

What the market did while you were not looking

Every three minutes the index reprices all nine thousand constituents from public exchange feeds and recomputes; at the close, the day's dividends are reinvested. This is the current state: who is up, who is down, and which markets are doing the moving.

II — Compounding

The market's own rate, uninterrupted

Move the controls. The curve is arithmetic rather than a forecast, and it shows the thing that makes long holding difficult: the first two decades look like almost nothing is happening. The default rate is the index's own, 10.55 percent a year since 1976 with dividends reinvested; 7.60 percent on price alone.

III — Composition

Nine thousand companies, one instruction

Each rectangle is a sector, sized by its live weight in the index. Hover to read it. The shape is the market's, not ours, which is the entire point of the construction.

IV — Methodology

Four rules, and no fifth

Every additional rule is another chance to be wrong about something. The index is designed to hold as few opinions as a portfolio can hold.

RULE I

Inclusion is automatic

Any listed company large enough enters at the next annual review, the largest nine thousand by market value. Selection committees and conviction scores play no part in it.

RULE II

Weighting follows the market

Constituents are held in proportion to market capitalisation. The index takes the market's estimate of what each company is worth and declines to improve on it.

RULE III

One review a year

A single scheduled review each September. Trading in between is limited to corporate actions, which holds turnover near two percent and keeps costs where they belong.

RULE IV

Exits are mechanical

A constituent leaves when it is delisted, acquired, or falls out of the nine thousand at review. Performance is never a reason to remove a company, and never a reason to add one.

Most benchmarks are built by deciding what to leave out. Index 9000 is built by refusing to decide.
